The Schutzwald was developed based on the original Gespensts by Mao Industries, meant to counter major issues seen in the Gespenst Mk-Is. Its armor has been thickened compared to the Gespensts' thin protection, while fixed weapons such as the high-output Twin Beam Cannon have been employed to address the Gespensts' low accuracy with handheld weapons, as well as their subpar anti-air capabilities. All of these factors made the Schutzwald fitting as a support artillery unit, however the added improvements increased production costs and required lengthy maintenance periods, thus ultimately the Schutzwald never entered mass-production.
OG Series[]
The Schutzwald was rolled out by Mao Industries near the end of NAD 184 and soon participated in performance evaluation tests conducted by the TFF Army. However, due to the above mentioned reasons, mass-production was rejected, and only 3 units were ever built. Unit 1 was painted gold and sent to Izu Base, Unit 2 was painted silver and stationed at Merritt Island Base, while Unit 3 was painted green and is currently still remaining in obscurity.
SRW OG1/SRW OGs1[]
After arriving at Izu Base, Unit 1 became Raidiese F. Branstein's personal unit throughout the DC War, gathering operational data for the development of future machines. After Rai switched to the R-2, following the DC War, the Schutzwald Unit 1 was presumably piloted by Giada Vernedi for the remainder of the L5 Campaign (due to Giada being the PT’s pilot when the routes first merge in Kyousuke Route).
Unit 2 was stationed at the retaken Merritt Island Base to defend a shuttle launch, piloted by Mao Industries employee Radha Bairaban. The PT was then stationed at the Hiryuu Kai after the ship arrived at Merritt Island to provide support, serving as Radha's personal machine throughout both the DC War and in the L5 Campaign. After that, Unit 2 was never to be seen again.
SRW OG2/SRW OGs2[]
After the L5 Campaign, the Schutzwalds were delivered back to Mao Industries' Moon facility. When the Inspectors launched their first attack on the facility, Radha sortied in Unit 1 along with Ling Mao in a Mass-Production Huckebein Mk-II and cooperated with the Hiryuu Kai crew to drive away the attackers. When the aliens returned for a second assault with a much larger force, the Schutzwald was once again deployed along with the AM Gunner and Huckebein 008L to provide assistance for the escaping Tausendfuessler craft carrying the Huckebein Mk-III Type-L. After successfully escaping from the now Inspector-occupied facility, the Schutzwald was stationed on the Hiryuu Kai as Radha's personal machine for the remainder of the eventual 4-way conflict.
SRW OGs2.5/SRW OGG[]
Radha and Gilliam Jaeger joined up with the Hagane from Izu Base following the first Bartoll attacks, bringing with them the Schutzwald Unit 1 and the Gespenst Type-RV. Radha would pilot the Schutzwald throughout the events of the game.
This marks the final appearance of the Schutzwald in the OG Series. By the time of 2nd OG, Radha had already switched from the Schutzwald to a more advanced white-colored Mass-Production Gespenst Mk-II Kai Type-C.
Armaments[]
Vulcan Cannon (バルカン砲 | Vulcan-Hou)
A pair of Vulcan guns are mounted on the Schutzwald's head. Good for taking out small targets like tanks and missiles.
Neo Plasma Cutter (ネオ・プラズマーカッター)
A plasma sword upgraded from the old Plasma Cutter. Equipped in OG2 and from OGs2 onwards. Swappable Weapon.
G-Railgun (G・レールガン)
A newly-developed long-range railgun, same type used by the R-Blade. Equipped in OG2 and from OGs2 onwards. Swappable Weapon.
