Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ (機動武闘伝ガンダムZZ,Kidō Sensi Gandamu Daburu Zēta) is the third television series in Sunrise's long-running Gundam franchise. The series aired a little over week after the end of Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, from March 1, 1986 to January 31, 1987, releasing 47 episodes. This series is somewhat controversial due to the change to make it more light-hearted, with heavier emphasis on slapstick humor for the first half of the series after the darker tone of Zeta Gundam's ending.
The series takes place immediately after Zeta Gundam and follows Judau Ashta, a teenage junk collector living in the run-down colony Shangri-La with his friends. Early episodes focus on trying Judau and his friends attempting to steal the Zeta Gundam from AEUG. Due to Kamille's absence, Bright reluctantly recruits Judau to fight off Axis, which has named itself Neo Zeon. The series also puts heavy emphasis on Haman Karn, an antagonist from Zeta Gundam.
Gundam ZZ, like Zeta Gundam and Char's Counterattack is the one of the staples of Super Robot Wars.
Its absence from the Z series can be explained with how Zeta Gundam: A New Translation's ending contradicts the events of ZZ, as that's the version of Zeta Gundam Z uses.
