Gundam (ガンダム Gandamu) is one of the longest running series of Japanese anime, featuring giant robots or mecha, created by Sunrise. Gundam is the collective term for the Universal Century (UC) series, like Mobile Suit Gundam and series in alternative timelines, such as Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and Mobile Suit Gundam 00.

In the 2008 Anime average sales figure ranking of copies sold in Japan (1970~2008 total sales figure averaged by episode), Gundam series got 4 positions out of the top 5. While Mobile Suit Gundam ranking second position, the third, fourth, fifth position is Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny, Mobile Suit Gundam Seed and Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam respectively. Also, New Mobile Report Gundam Wing ranked 18th and Mobile Suit ZZ Gundam ranked 20th.

In the Super Robot Wars series, Gundam has been a franchise featured prominently in the games since its debut, alongside Mazinger Z and Getter Robo, the three appearing in most games from the series. Most notably Gundam represent the Real Robot genre of anime, while Mazinger Z and Getter Robo represent the Super Robot genre.

Timeline[]

Below is a list of Gundam works that appeared in Super Robot Wars and a summary of their timelines.

Universal Century[]

Universal Century (宇宙世紀 Uchū Seiki) is one of the timelines of the Gundam anime metaseries, along with the first timeline to be created and the primary Gundam timeline. The Universal Century starts after humans begin to populate space, after construction of the first space colony side at Side 1 was completed.

Future Century[]

Future Century is a timeline where the ruling elites left Earth for space colonies. Two years after the migration, a full-scale war developed on Earth as each nation fought to gain control. The colonies formed the United Colonies Federation and regained control of the nations on Earth. The United Colonies Federation decides to end the conflict on Earth by holding a tournament called Gundam Fight every four years. The nation represented by the winning Gundam earns the right to lead Earth and the colonies for the next four years.

After Colony[]

The After Colony timeline is set in a universe in which the Gundams are the primary arm of the space colonies' resistance, rather than forming a small part of a larger army.

After War[]

After War is the third of a series of Gundam anime's made in the 1990s that take place in an alternate universe, following the success of Mobile Fighter G Gundam and New Mobile Report Gundam Wing. This period starts following the massive colony drops that brought an end to the seventh Space War and killed 99% of humanity living on the Earth's surface. The After War series shares some similarities with the Universal Century.

Correct Century[]

The Correct Century (aka Seireki) is the theoretical result of a merging of the other timelines seen in Gundam prior to Turn A Gundam. Set in an indeterminate number of years into the far-flung future, the Seireki (True History) is a universe in which all technology on Earth and human civilizations in space, except for the Moon, were destroyed – the culmination of mankind's "Black History." As a result, the technological level on Earth in this timeline is comparable to that of the Real World in the early 1900s.

In stark contrast to the backwards nature of Earthlings is the almost Utopia society of the Moonrace – a futuristic society which has changed the barren landscape of the moon into a paradise. The Moonrace is the only group which has advanced to the point of having their own Mobile Suits: the people of Earth only find Mobile Suits as relics of the far-flung past in archaeological digs, such as the titular machine of Turn A Gundam, referred to by the characters as the White Doll.

  • Turn A Gundam (1999)

Cosmic Era[]

The Cosmic Era is a timeline with similarities with the Universal Century timeline.

Anno Domini[]

Anno Domini is a timeline derived from the real life term, which is the designation used to number years after the birth of Christ in the Julian and Gregorian calendar. The story of Gundam 00 is running within the same timeline as the present society is currently residing in, around 300 years into the future from today.
