Not to be confused with the resembling Gespenst Type-S
The Gespenst Type-R (ゲシュペンスト・タイプR) is a Banpresto Original Mecha debuting in The 4th Super Robot Wars. It is a variant of the Gespenst and part of the Gespenst Series, with its brother unit being the Gespenst Type-S. Data from the Type-R was used to develop the Gespenst Mk-II Type-R. In the OG timeline, the unit itself was later upgraded into the Gespenst Type-RV.
Technological and Historical[]
One of the 2 main Gespenst Mk-I variations, the other unit being the Gespenst Type-S. Overall, compared to the Type-S, the Type-R is more geared towards a Real Robot specification, equipped with long-range weapons and higher mobility but weaker armor. It also has a layer of Beam Coat to defend against beam weapons.
Classic Series[]
The Gespenst Type-R serves as the Real Route main hero's leading mecha for the first half of 4th SRW (S) / entirety of SRW F. It was developed as the first ever Personal Trooper and served as the prototype for the development of the Huckebein. In this timeline, both the Type-R and Type-S are simply known as "Gespenst".
4th SRW/4th SRW S/SRW F[]
It is the main hero's mecha for the first half (4th/4th S) / entirety (F) of the Real Robot Route for the games. An improved variant of the Gespenst known as the Gespenst Mk-II was also built and piloted by Gilliam Jaeger.
SRW F Final[]
By F Final, the machine became outdated and did not see much action aside from the first stage, as the more powerful Gespenst Mk-II Type-R was available for the player after Stage 1.
OG Series[]
The Gespenst Type-R was one of the first 3 Personal Trooper units ever created. Development began in NAD 179, after Mao Industries accepted the Terra Federation Forces' offer of producing a 20-meter humanoid mobile weapon in preparation against alien invaders. A Nuclear Fusion Reactor was chosen as a power source due to its constant high energy output and extended operation time, though it took much effort from Mao Industries' technical department to miniaturize the large reactor design down to sufficient size. For the piloting method, a special operating system known as TC-OS was developed, which receives set commands from the pilot, analyzes the surrounding environment and current state of the PT, before carrying out the action. With this system, pilots can effectively concentrate more on decision-making and worry less about complicated machine controls. Through these multiple technological breakthroughs, the Gespenst prototypes were completed at the end of NAD 180, after only a single year of development. Although they were built to operate in all environments, Unit 2 specialized in space combat while Unit 3 specialized in ground combat, in anticipation of future operations, As a result, they were officially designated as PTX-001 (Unit 1), PTX-002 (Unit 2) and PTX-003 (Unit 3).
Entering NAD 181, Mao Industries sent the PTX-001 to participate in the TFF's evaluation test, competing with mobile weapon models from other companies. The machines were tested in various environments and situations, out of which the PTX-001 showed superior performance above all other models and received the highest score. Subsequently, Mao Industries became the TFF's primary Personal Trooper developer. Even so, the highly-regarded Gespenst was not without problems. Firstly, it was not capable of unassisted atmospheric flight and can only briefly glide, which has not yet fully visualized the TFF's idea for an "all-purpose weapon", having to leave aerial combat for fighter jets to handle. Furthermore, its armor was thinner than expected, and momentary blurs often appear when using handheld shooting weapons, reducing accuracy, which was said as the consequence of Mao Industries pursuing weapon versatility. After receiving these complaints from the TFF, Mao Industries quickly set off to subjugate the limitations by upgrading the Gespenst units.
Out of the 3 Mk-Is, the PTX-001 Gespenst was given the designation "Type-R" (R for Rapidity), undergoing modifications aimed at improving its gliding duration, agility and mobility. In NAD 182, the Gespensts Type-R and Type-S were assigned to the Special Tactics Guidance Corps for the development of combat-use TC-OS Motion Patterns, as the existing Motion Patterns at the time were only basic actions inputted in by the Mao Industries staff. The skilled Guidance Corps pilots mostly controlled the units manually, and the machine's movements were recorded through a tracing system, allowing for the compilation of new Motion Patterns, which were then fed back to the machine's TC-OS. Through mock battles between the 2 Gespenst units, more advanced Patterns were compiled, further completing the TC-OS day by day.
Data gathered from the Mk-I units was used to develop future Personal Troopers, such as the bombardment-type PTX-004 Schutzwald, the mass-production candidate prototype PTX-005 Wildschwein, and the next generation PTX-007 Gespenst Mk-IIs. After tests were complete, the Type-R was sent back to Mao Industries, where it received further upgrades during the DC War.
SRW OG/SRW OGs1[]
Only available as a Secret Unit for Kyousuke Route. If conditions are fulfilled, the Type-R will be fielded in combat during the L5 Campaign as Gilliam Jaeger's personal unit, appearing when Gilliam regrouped with the Steel Dragon Squadron during Galuin Mehabel's assault on Izu Base.
SRW OG2/SRW OGs2[]
The Type-R once again saw action during the Inspector Incident, now equipped with a Tesla Drive for flight. It had a skirmish against the invading Inspectors who assaulted Nevi'im, forcing Gilliam to escape the battlefield along with the Hiryuu Kai due to the Inspectors' overwhelming power. Later, as part of the Halloween Plan proposed by Gilliam to give the outdated Gespenst Series an overhaul, the Gespenst Type-R underwent a major refurbishment as the first step of the Plan, and became the Gespenst Type-RV.
SRW OGIN[]
In The Inspector timeline, the Gespenst Type-R was hidden by Gilliam inside the castle at the Duchy of Riksent, as part of a covert mission in anticipation of invading Neue DC forces. When Riksent did end up getting attacked, Gilliam helped Princess Shine Hausen, Raidiese F. Branstein and Latune Subbota to escape and summoned the Type-R to safely extract them away from pursuing infantry, while Kyousuke Nanbu and Excellen Browning intercepted enemy AMs with the Gespenst Mk-II Type-SA and Weissritter respectively. Eventually, the Type-R was upgraded into the Type-RV like in the games.
It is shown in the anime that Gilliam is capable of providing certain commands to the Type-R from a distance through a wrist communicator. This is also where the Type-R's summoning call can be heard for the first time: "Mainterm Access! Mode Active! Call Gespenst!".
Armaments & Attacks[]
- Fighting (格闘 | Kakutou)
The Gespenst Type-R engages in hand-to-hand combat with the enemy. Only seen in OG1.
- Weapon Breaker (ウェポン・ブレイカー)
A special projectile used to reduce enemies' attack damage, added in OG2/OGs2. It is a Status Swappable Weapon, however due to the Type-R being an On-Spot Ally in OG2/OGs2 it is not possible to unequip this weapon.
- Split Missile (スプリットミサイル)
Standard armament seen on the Gespenst Series, it is essentially a deployable missile container loaded with 6 missiles. After launching, the container's front cover is jettisoned and the missiles within fly towards their target. A pair of them can be mounted on the Gespenst's stabilizer pylon rack along with 2 Slash Rippers. Swappable Weapon in OG1.
- Plasma Cutter (プラズマカッター)
3 plasma swords for close combat are mounted on the left forearm. This composition was adopted early on in development as a countermeasure to each Cutter's short operational time, however the problem was later remedied. Ultimately the arrangement was still kept, with the additional Cutters acting as spares. Swappable Weapon in OG1, replaced in OG2/OGs with Neo Plasma Cutters.
- Neo Plasma Cutter (ネオ・プラズマカッター)
An upgraded version of the Plasma Cutter, replacing the old one in OG2 and OGs.
- Rectangle Launcher (レクタングル・ランチャー)
A large, box-shaped handheld long-range cannon. Seen equipped in OG2 and OGs.
- Slash Ripper (スラッシュリッパー)
Circular remote-controlled rotor weapons equipped with 3 folding blades, each installed with 3 vernier thrusters per side for a total of 6 maneuvering thrusters. They are deployed to slash enemies apart. A pair of them can be mounted on the inner side of the Gespenst's stabilizer pylon rack along with 2 Split Missiles, though they do have dedicated containers. Included in the HG 1/144 model kit.
- Leap Slasher (リープ・スラッシャー)
A remote-controlled weapon consisting of 8 arc-shaped parts, which combine to form a beam-emitting ring and sent to attack the enemy. It is capable of "leaping" through subspace to reduce travelling time and for the element of surprise, hence the name. Originally the Huckebein's unique weapon, it was added as a Swappable Weapon in OG2 and OGs.
- Neutron Beam (ニュートロンビーム)
The Gespenst Type-R's primary weapon, a destructive energy rifle. Despite its name, the rifle fires accelerated neutral particles, which are not necessarily neutrons. However, in OG, the weapon is installed with a black box that only Gilliam can access, which may have something to do with neutrons. Beam attribute is added in SRW F only. Barrier Pierce attribute is added from OGs onwards.
- Mega Buster Cannon (メガ・バスターキャノン)
A prototype beam cannon that was equipped on the Type-R for testing purposes, seen in Super Robot Wars OG Chronicle. The weapon's power was so immense that it short-circuited the Type-R just after a single blast. Later equipped on the Gespenst Type-RV.
