The Dynamic General Guardian are a series of fictional super robots from the Super Robot Taisen series. Often called Double G units, for short, they have appeared in the Super Robot Taisen Alpha series and Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation series. All units in this series of robots are given the designation DGG.

DGG-XAM1 Daizengar

Dygenguard

Dynamic General Guardian Unit 01

The first unit of the Dynamic General Guardian series, the Daizengar(ダイゼンガー) has appeared as Sanger Zonvolt's second unit in Super Robot Taisen Alpha 2. It would reappear in Super Robot Taisen Alpha 3, Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation 2 and Super Robot Taisen Original Generations.

Appearance

The Daizengar is mostly a shade of light black accompanied by a light shade of grey. On various parts of its body is does have yellow most notably over its hands, on the shoulders' General Blasters, and the knee spikes. It also has some red which make up the fingers, lower chest, much of the lower legs, and are highlights along the face. Daigenguard looks very much like an angry, fierce demon prepared for combat, but also maintains a design reminiscent of a samurai.

Technical And Historical

After the fall of the Divine Crusaders, many of the remnants dissolved back into the Earth Federation Army. The Tesla Leicht Institute (containing many former Divine Crusaders technical personnel), along with Mao Industries, began working on a new series of machines. The first of these was the DGG-XAM1 Dynamic General Guardian (codenamed, Double G), which was supposed to be a unit that would replace the Grungust series as the mainstray super robot mecha. The Double G was superior to the Grungust in many ways and was quite formidable, in terms of defensive and offensive capabilities. The story of the Dygenguard's unveiling now varies depending on game.

In the Alpha universe, this unit is handed to the Alpha Numbers. Sanger Zonvolt used his Grungust Type-3 to defend the Alpha Numbers' battleships from an attack by Kukuru, which in turn heavily damaged his unit. The Double G was launched, even though its operating system was not yet completed, and thus could not use any of its onboard weapons. Luckily, Sanger's old comrade, Elzam V. Branstein, under the disguise of Rätsel Feinschmecker, appeared. Sanger, now rebuffed with his statement that he is no longer a man who will fight for vengeance but for his honor once more, asks for the (Type-3) Sanshiki Zankantou, and Rätsel hands it to him. Sanger utilizes the sword as his only weapon and refuses to have the machine use any of its original weapons. He abbreviates the Dynamic General Guardian's katakana spelling (ダイナミック・ゼネラル・ガーディアン, Dainamikku Zeneraru Gādian) into Daizengar . Sanger declares his War God Armament, Daizengar, to be his new sword to smite all evil.

In the Original Generation universe, the DGG-XAM1 Dynamic General Guardian is more or less a custom unit made for Sanger, manufactured alongside its brother unit, the DGG-XAM2 Aussenseiter. Bian Zoldark, leader of the Divine Crusaders, had secretly built the two Double G units, but never finished completing them. It would be left in the hands of the staff at the Tesla Leicht Institute to finish the task. A similar event to what happened in Alpha 2 occurs, but with some differences. Sanger and Rätsel participate in a battle to recapture the Tesla Leicht Institute, where many of their comrades are held. While Rätsel infiltrates it, Sanger is busy fighting off the Inspectors' bioroid army, led by Vigagi and his robot, the Galgau. Sanger's Grungust Type-3 is heavily damaged while fighting Vigagi. The Dygenguard is launched out and Sanger attempts to use it, but the machine's operating system has not been fully compiled yet. Before Vigagi can deal the finishing blow, Wodan Ymir, Sanger's combat rival from the Shadow-Mirror, appears, saving him from Vigagi. Because Wodan has challenged Sanger, neither of them can die until their score with one another is settled. Wodan then gives Sanger Sanshiki (the Type-3) Zankantou, and he proceeds to fight Vigagi and his forces.

The Dygenguard's main weapon is the Zankantou, a massive sword shaped like a katana. It can utilize liquid memory metal to allow the blade to grow into a large broadsword for heavier combat. Dygenguard's cockpit uses a Direct Motion Link System, which allows the mecha to follow the exact movements of the pilot - this is perfect for the samurai Sanger, who may now use his Zankantou with no restrictions.

The arms can be launched from the base of the elbow to act as a mid-ranged weapon.

The two circular shoulder plates can fire energy beams.
Guardian Sword (ガーディアンズ・ソード, Gādianzu Sōdo)
A smaller sword apparently mounted in one of the General Guardian's shins that can be used for close-range combat.

Techniques:

Zankantōu Denkōsekka (斬艦刀・電光石火)
Sanger uses the Zankantou in its base form with a swift swipe in the air to create a strong enough wind to cut the enemy.
Zankantōu Daisharin (斬艦刀・大車輪)
Sanger uses the liquid memory metal to enlarge the  Zankantou into a larger kukri-like blade. It then throw it as if it were a boomerang.
Zankantōu Gakai (斬艦刀・牙壊)
Using the Zankantou  in its base form, Sanger rushes past an opponent and slashes them with one swift stroke.
Zankantōu Raikō Giri (斬艦刀・雷光斬り)
Sanger enlarges the Zankantou  into a large broadsword. It then uses it to perform a giant vertical strike from below the opponent and then performing a swift horizontal strike so fast that it is almost invisible to the human eye. In Original Generations, Sanger would perform a series of slashes, before ending with a clean, vertical cut. This attack is also called the Zankantōu Shippu Jinrai.
Zankantōu Un'yō no Tachi (斬艦刀・雲燿の太刀)
Sanger enlarges the Zankantou  to such a point that it's almost too large for the arms to even handle. Sanger lifts the weapon high above the head of the Daizengar and proceeds to take to the sky. The Dygenguard drops down with a single bisecting slash as a finishing attack.
Tatsumaki Zankantōu Ikkitōsen (竜巻斬艦刀・逸騎刀閃)
An overwhelmingly powerful combination attack between the Daizengar and the Aussenseiter. Rätsel transforms the Aussenseiter to its Pferde (German for Equidae) Mode and lets Daizengar ride it. Riding towards the enemy as a mecha-scale samurai on horseback, Sanger then strikes with the Zankantou in a high-speed horizontal slash, then either cleaves the enemy vertically afterwards (Original Generation 2 version) or spins the Zankantou very rapidly to generate a whirlwind that carries the bisected enemy mecha up into the air to explode (Alpha 3 version) before adding a final horizontal slash upon the enemy (Original Generations version). During this attack, the Daizengar wears the Aussenseiter's cape on its back.

Trivia

  • Due to the pronunciation of the Dygenguard's name in Japanese engrish, English speaking fans of the series often refer to it as "DaiZengar," maintaining the Japanese. A follow up conversation also was included in Original Generation 2, whereby members of the SRX Team talks jokingly about renaming the SRX into either "DaiRyusei", "DaiAya", "DaiRai", or the "DaiRaiOh".
  • Although the name of the Dygenguard's third Zankantōu form attack is the Zankantōu Raikō Giri, Sanger would occasionally abbreviate the attack as the Zankantōu Shippu Jinrai in Original Generations. Shippu Jinrai is actually the default background music of the third Dynamic General Guardian, the DaiRaiOh.
  • The weapon systems (and their attack animations) disabled by Sanger are actually hidden in the code of Super Robot Taisen Original Generations, but are made inaccessible, unless the player hacks the game using a cheating device. However, these weapons were made available for use in Super Robot Taisen Original Generation Gaiden.

DGG-XAM2 Aussenseiter

Dynamic General Guardian Unit 02

The second unit of the Dynamic General Guardian series, the Aussenseiter(アウセンザイター/Außenseiter) has appeared as a playable unit in Alpha 3, Original Generation 2 and Original Generations.

Description

The Aussenseiter is colored dark black and has dark grey highlighting in spots. It also has red coloring on its shins, ankles, skirt armor, forarms, shoulder plates, and head. One of the Aussenseiter's most distinctive features are two large plates on its shoulders which can be detached and used as throwing weapons. On the Aussenseiter's head is a white "mane", resembling a stallion's. It also has a detachable black cape on its back.

Technical And Historical

The DGG-XAM2 Aussenseiter is the brother unit to the Dygenguard, built by Mao Industries, with help from the Tesla Liecht Institute. While the Dygenguard is made primarily for melee attack purposes, the Aussenseiter can be used primarily for long range bombardment. It is unusually fast and mobile for a super robot, and sports a pair of ranged cannons, hidden under its shoulder plates. The Aussenseiter can transform into a horse for the Dygenguard to ride on to perform their combination attack, the Tatsumaki Zankantō. Aussenseiter means Dark Horse in German - a fitting name, given Rätsel Feinschmecker's tendency.

In Super Robot Wars Alpha 3, this unit has been completed at the Tesla Liecht Institute for Rätsel Feinschmecker and is handed to him for his use. As with all of Rätsel's machines, he refers to it as "Trombe," after his own horse back in his home colony of Elpis.

In Original Generation 2, it serves the same purpose: Rätsel retrieves this unit upon his and Sanger Zonvolt's raid of the Tesla Liecht Institute, held captive by the Inspectors. With the Aussenseiter, Rätsel joins in the fight with Sanger, after he receives the Grungust Type-3 (Sanshiki)  Zankantou  from Wodan Ymir.

Sturm Angriff (Storm Assault )
There are three animated versions of this attack:
In the Original Generation 2 version, the Aussenseiter executes its Lanzer Kanone-W attack while rushing straight at the enemy. It then impales the target on the bayonet tip of his right-hand Lanzer Kanone, lifts the enemy up into the air until it is set down on his other side, then fires the Lanzer Kanone at point-blank range, catapulting the impaled enemy away to explode.
In the Alpha 3 version, the Aussenseiter dives into the group of enemies and from within the group it smacks them about with its cannons while in quick and swift motions, it fires them at all the surrounding opponents to deliver decisive shots to all of them.
In the Original Generations version, the Aussenseiter dashes forward towards a single target, firing both guns and circling the target before throwing one gun away to fling its cape over its opponent. It continues to fire a few more rounds before impaling the enemy on the bayonet, lifting the target directly overhead and firing at point blank range directly upwards, destroying the cape in the process. Oddly enough, the cape is inexplicably restored by the next attack.
Tatsumaki Zankantōu Ikkitōsen (竜巻斬艦刀・逸騎刀閃)

An overwhelmingly powerful combination attack between the Dygenguard and the Aussenseiter. Rätsel transforms the Aussenseiter to its Pferde Mode and lets Sanger's Dygenguard ride it. DGG-XAM3 RaiOh/DGG-XAM3C DaiRaiOh/DGG-XAM03 JinRai

The third unit of the Dynamic General Guardian series, the Raioh, and its upgrade, the DaiRaiOh, are one of protagonist units in Alpha 3. RaiOh was set to appear in the 2nd Super Robot Wars Original Generation along with an original prototype called the JinRai.

The RaiOh

The RaiOh is a unit colored in bright grey and silver for most of its body, with black in various areas. The design is humanoid, and is rounded instead of the boxiness commonly found in giant robots. Noticeable features include the gold crown-like decoration on the head and the red scarf. It also has ruby-like jewels on many parts of its body, most notably the shoulders and crown.

The DaiRaiOh looks similar to the RaiOh, but has a larger crown, sports extra armor around its chassis and has more extravagant gold highlights around its shoulders, arms, knees and legs.

The JinRai also looks similar to the RaiOh, albeit colored black, has differently shaped head and shoulders as well as having it's entire body covered in a large cape.

Many fans have noted that the RaiOh and the DaiRaiOh's designs are likely heavily influenced by the famous toku series Kamen Rider. Such influences include the crimson scarf and a final attack that involves a powerful kick. Also, the animation prior to the DaiRaiOh's final attack reveals the machine's humanoid faceplate that bears a resemblance to Hongo Takeshi, the first Kamen Rider.

DaiRaiOh

Dynamic General Guardian Unit 03

The RaiOh is the latest machine in the Dynamic General Guardian series and is designated with the codename DGG-XAM3. This machine, though developed by Mao Industries and the Tesla Leicht Institute, is overlooked by scientist, Minaki Tomine. The RaiOh harnesses lightning energy via plasma drives to power its attacks. Minaki finished developing her father, Kaoru Tomine's Lead Innovative Organic Harmony System and installed it in the RaiOh. Kaoru wanted to create a world of perfect soldiers, thus used the LIOH System to carry out this plot.

Touma Kanou, a delivery boy, becomes the RaiOh's pilot through a chance of fate. When Balmar begins its second invasion of Earth, he happens to be at Minaki's house while doing his job. He is eventually placed in a situation where he is forced to pilot the RaiOh. After this, he becomes the pilot of the machine and is trained by members of the Alpha Numbers. The LIOH System and Touma clash, however -- on one such occasion, it causes Touma to go completely insane. It would take a decisive blow by Sanger Zonvolt in his Dygenguard to stop Touma. After this, even though it is a system that can promise great results, the device is removed. Instead, the cockpit is outfitted to use the Direct Motion Link System, which follows the exact movements of Touma's body. Using this system, he invents the "Rising Meteor" attack, which takes full advantage of its new mobility.

A while later, the RaiOh takes immense damage from a battle with Touma's combat rival, Baran Doban of Balmar. Using many of the Dygenguard's parts, it is upgraded into the DGG-XAM3C DaiRaiOh, which is a powerful improvement over the RaiOh, sporting better armor and attack capabilities. It is accepted by its peers and the fanbase as a true Dynamic General Guardian; to emphasize, in its first sortie, the DaiRaiOh destroyed 100 enemy units by itself. In another sortie with Baran Doban, the face of the machine is smashed. Touma decides not to repair it, and the "scar" stays. In a later battle against Hazal Gozzo of Balmar, Touma is finally able to push the DaiRaiOh past its limits with his new JinRai attack, achieving such great power that the LIOH System's abilities are completely outclassed by Touma's own strength.

The DGG-XAM03 JinRai

The DGG-XAM03 JinRai (ジンライ) is the predecessor of the RaiOh, the JinRai is designated as the third Dynamic General Guardian unit created by Dr. Kaoru Tomine, based on designs by Bian Zoldark. It is equipped with the S-ZLAI (Shippu ZinLai), a special artificial intelligence system which allows it to move without a pilot. Its primary objective is to destroy the Dygenguard and Aussenseiter, the first two Dynamic General Guardians.

The RaiOh's name, written in kanji as (雷凰) means "Lightning Phoenix", but can also be interpreted as the pronunciation of "LIOH" (as there is no difference between L and R in Japanese). When the RaiOh is upgraded to DaiRaiOh (大雷凰), it becomes the "Great Lightning Phoenix" . The 'dai' (大), meaning "big, great", can also function as part of the abbreviation "Dynamic Lightning Over" ("Dainamikku Raitoningu Ohbaa").

A shot of plasma energy is launched from the leg.
Counter Break
The plasma leaders in the arms uses electricity to "lasso" the enemy off of the ground and pull it toward RaiOh. The mech delivers a powerful kick as the victim arrives.
Lightning Fall
The RaiOh flies into the air and delivers a charged, lightning kick aimed at the ground that creates a shockwave effect, damaging all targets in its area of effect.
Rising Meteor
The RaiOh charges itself up. It delivers a series of kicks to its target to knock it high into the air and then delivers a final kick, sending the enemy back down to the ground.

Harken Impulse Drive
A pair of plasma beam shots are launched from the legs.
Counter Spike Charge
The plasma leaders in the arms generate an even greater amount of electricity to grab the target off of the ground. The DaiRaiOh then delivers a strong kick attack.
Plasma Spiral Dive
The DaiRaiOh uses powerful knee-mounted thrusters to deliver a charged, lightning kick aimed at the ground that creates a shockwave effect, damaging surrounding targets in its area of effect.
Rising Meteor Inferno
The DaiRaiOh delivers a series of punches and kicks, sending the enemy high into the air. The DaiRaiOh flies headlong, grabbing its target, and proceeds to hurl it further up into the air. Charging up for a final attack, the DaiRaiOh rushes for a finishing, vertical kick that utterly shatters the target, exploding in mid-air.
JinRai
Touma's ultimate attack. With Minaki's approval, the limiters in the DaiRaiOh's plasma drives are released. The faceplate covering the DaiRaiOh retracts, revealing its face and "scar". The energy buildup from the plasma drives forms two oversized wings on its back, and the DaiRaiOh flies towards its target. With a fully charged lightning kick, the enemy is driven backward by the force of the attack, following a series of weaker melee attack, burning the target with its plasma energy. The DaiRaiOh then flies up to the air vertically, releasing the rest of the plasma energy, dealing a final downward kick, driving the enemy into the ground, creating a reaction so powerful that it forms a pillar of fire from ground zero upward, high into the atmosphere. The DaiRaiOh leaps out of the pillar, as the pillar continues to burn spectacularly.
Interesting to note is that the characters for the JinRai attack mean, appropriately enough, "Divine Lightning".

Trivia

  • The name DaiRaiOh briefly debuted first in Original Generation 2, during a conversation with the SRX Team. Upon discovering the name of Sanger's new machine, Ryusei suggests similarly changing the name of the SRX, with DaiRaiOh being one of the ideas. Lune Zoldark, the daughter of Bian Zoldark, notes that it's a good name. Sure enough, the DaiRaiOh made its playable debut with the release of Alpha 3, months after Original Generation 2 was released. The conversation of this in Original Generation 2 also foreshadows the RaiOh and the DaiRaiOh's appearance in a future Original Generation title.

Notes

In both the Alpha and Original Generation timelines, Rätsel mentions there are four Dynamic General Guardian units, but as of the release of Original Generations, nothing new on the fourth unit is known. However, it is possbile that the fourth unit could be the Compatible Kaiser, since Kisaburo Azuma used data from the Double G series to rebuild the damaged machine. Still, the Compatible Kaiser does not carry the DGG designation, thereby leaving open the possible existence of a fourth unit somewhere else. Fans have speculated that the fourth, would likely be modeled after a motorcycle in order to support Raioh/Dairaioh, much in the same way Aussenseiter supports Dyzengar.
