The DyGenGuar (ダイゼンガー), also known as Bushin Soukou DyGenGuar (武神装攻ダイゼンガー | War God Armament Assault DyGenGuar) is a Banpresto Original Mecha debuting in The 2nd Super Robot Wars Alpha. It is the first Dynamic General Guardian unit. It is piloted by Sänger Sombold.

Technological and Historical[]

The DyGenGuar was developed as the first Dynamic General Guardian unit, an agile mecha geared towards sword combat and tuned specifically for pilot Sanger Sombold. Similar to the other DGG units, DyGenGuar is installed with the ABMD (Artificial Bone & Muscle tissue Drive) System throughout its body, giving it unprecedented agility rarely seen in other robots despite its immense size. Unlike normal PTs and SRs, the DyGenGuar is controlled by a Direct Motion Link (DML) System, allowing for the mecha to trace after the movement of its pilot in combat. To support this system, a specialized OS known as JINKI-1 is installed, which attempts to register the pilot's movements inside the cockpit and translate it back to the mecha. A major problem with this system is that precisely predicting and mimicking a person's slightest movements is an incredibly difficult task, however due to its primary pilot, Sanger Sombold's usual straightforward actions and thought patterns, the tracing errors in the DML System can be minimized to adequate levels. For convenience, the DyGenGuar's cockpit is also a stand-up type similar to the Valsione or Soulgain, as Sanger pilots the mecha through his body movements, voice recognition, and a handheld controller modeled after a sword's hilt. Aside from its signature Sanshiki Zankantou, the DyGenGuar is also equipped with built-in weapons, which includes the Dynamic Knuckle, General Blaster, and Guardian's Sword.

The DyGenGuar is designed to work alongside with its partner unit, the speedy gun-slinging Aussenseiter piloted by Ratsel Feinschmaker. When "Pferd Mode" (プフェールト・モード) is activated on both units, Aussenseiter transforms into an oversized mechanical horse as DyGenGuar dons its partner's cape and rides on Aussenseiter, so it is possible that the Pferd Mode on DyGenGuar triggers a program dedicated to horseback fighting.

Alpha Series[]

The DyGenGuar was built by the Divine Crusaders and was to be assigned as defense for the Earth Cradle, however with the construction of the Cradle coming to a halt, so did the development of the DyGenGuar. After the Balmar Campaign, the mecha was transported to the Tesla Reich Institute for restoration, where it proved to be difficult to handle even for the skilled technicians there. In the end, they managed to get it to somewhat move, but the fixed weapons were still inoperable, which is why Prof. Robert H. Ohmiya brought it to G-Island City in order to ask for Prof. Reo Shishiou's assistance on the renovation process.

In the end, DyGenGuar's built-in weapons were never properly repaired, mainly due to Sanger considering them as unnecessary.

SRW Alpha 2[]

As Reo first glanced his eyes on the Double G, the Alpha Numbers were preparing for takeoff into space when they were attacked by Jamatai Kingdom forces, led by Kukuru in her Machine Cell-boosted Magaruga. Sanger sortied in his Grungust Type-3 in an attempt to hold them off, and while he was successful in buying time for his comrades to depart, his Type-3 ended up being disarmed of the Sanshiki Zankantou and severely damaged by the Magaruga. Witnessing the dire situation, the remaining GGG personnel who remained at G-Island City decided to boot up the unfinished DyGenGuar, as Ratsel Feinschmecker makes a timely arrival in his Huckebein Mk-III Trombe in order to buy time. With the start-up process complete, the DyGenGuar was deployed to Sanger's position, as the Major ditches his Type-3 and boards the Dynamic General Guardian. Unfortunately, when Sanger was about to enter combat, DyGenGuar's lower body did not budge an inch due to errors in the DML System. Even after the immobilized DyGenGuar received some damage from Magaruga's attacks, the valiant Sanger still declared the advent of the Bujin Soukou to all, as DyGenGuar catches the Sanshiki Zankantou thrown to it by the Mk-III Trombe. Reo soon followed by uploading the patchwork program he made to DyGenGuar, finally allowing it to duel the Magaruga, overpowering it and driving away the attackers.

SRW Alpha 3[]

The DyGenGuar, Aussenseiter, and R-Blade Custom appeared in front of the Alpha Numbers to provide support against the Golar Golem squadron, who jumped at the chance for an assault right after GaoGaiGar defeated the New Machine Species Zonuda Robo in combat.

Aside from Touma Route (which follows Sanger Route in Alpha 2), the other routes in Alpha 3 mentioned Sanger awakening inside the Earth Cradle due to an attack from the underground coalition, before later regrouping with Ratsel and receiving the DyGenGuar.

OG Series[]

The first two DGG units, DyGenGuar and Aussenseiter, were conceived by Prof. Bian Zoldark as the personal machines of Sanger Sombold and Elzam V. Branstein respectively, along with to have the DyGenGuar serving as defense for the Earth Cradle. Aside from the aforementioned built-in weapons (which drew inspiration from the Grungust Series), the DyGenGuar was also planned to be loaded with experimental armaments, such as the G-Impact Stake and the Neo Chakram Shooter. Development began during the DC War, however with Bian's death and the DC's hierarchy order collapsing, the machines were left unfinished and stored within the Tesla Reich Institute's bottommost hangar, where they would be further completed by the staff.

Unlike in the Alpha Series, DyGenGuar's internal weapons were eventually fixed, and finally saw first usage in OG Gaiden. However, DyGenGuar's swordfight system and internal weapons separately operate on JINKI-1 and TC-OS respectively, requiring OS switching for Sanger to either use its Sanshiki Zankantou or use the other weapons. This inconvenience was solved after OG Gaiden, with the DyGenGuar undergoing a full OS recompilation, allowing it to have access to all of its weapons at the same time by the time of 2nd OG.

SRW OG2/SRW OGs2[]

When the Tesla Reich Institute was taken over by the Inspectors, the staff there still continued to work on the DGGs in utmost secrecy. When Sanger and Ratsel took part in the battle to liberate the Institute, a similar event to what happened in SRW Alpha 2 occurred, with some differences. While Ratsel infiltrated the Institute, Sanger fended off against the Inspectors' bioroid army on the outside, led by Vigagi in his Galgau. Sänger's Grungust Type-3 was heavily damaged and disarmed of its Sanshiki Zankantou while fighting Galgau. Ratsel rescued the Institute staff and the DyGenGuar was launched out. Sänger boarded the machine and attempted to fight back, however the machine's JINKI-1 OS had not been fully compiled yet. Before Galgau can deal the finishing blow, Wodan Ymir appeared in his Thrudgelmir, saving DyGenGuar from the Galgau. Wishing to settle the score with Sanger in a proper duel one day, Wodan handed the Sanshiki Zankantou to DyGenGuar. Moments later, Filio Presty finished his on-the-spot patchwork program and beamed it to DyGenGuar, finally allowing the mecha to enter combat. Together, Sanger, Wodan and Ratsel drove the Inspectors away, thus freeing the Tesla Reich Institute from the aliens' grasp. After the battle, Robert suggested that they should get DyGenGuar's internal weapons fixed, however since the repairs would take up to a month, Sanger turned down on the offer, stating that the Bujin Soukou's strength is needed right now.

The DyGenGuar fought together with the rest of the Steel Dragon Squadron in the battles to come, which includes Operation Plantagenet, the battle at the Earth Cradle (where Sanger and Wodan finally settled their score), and in the final showdown against Inspector, Shadow-Mirror and Einst forces.

SRW OGs2.5/SRW OGG[]

Following the Inspector Incident and the ensuing 4-way conflict, the DyGenGuar was stationed on the Kurogane, as the ship carried out covert operations from the shadows in order to maintain peace. During an attack staged on the Kurogane by Neue DC remnant forces, the DyGenGuar crossed swords with Murata's Guarlion Custom "Mumyou". The Kurogane combat force also arrived to provide support for SD Squadron during the raid on Hellgate, and the resulting showdown with Wilhelm V. Jürgen's Valsion Kai Type-CF.

Shortly after the appearance of the Swordian in Earth's orbit and the invasion of the Shura, the Kurogane crew headed to the city of Hakodate and liberated the city from Shura forces, with DyGenGuar facing the Andras and Ialdabaoth in combat. After recruiting Folka Albark and his Ialdabaoth, the Kurogane crew headed to the Tesla Reich Institute to regroup with the SD Squadron, where they fought the Chuujin. During a mission to collect Swordian's Daggers used by the Shura so that the Steel Dragon Squadron could have a means of entering Swordian, DyGenGuar was ambushed by Andras, resulting in the Zankantou receiving damage and rendered unavailable. Fortunately, the Tesla Reich staff had anticipated an event like this in advance, and thus they had fully restored all of DyGenGuar's built-in weapons, allowing for DyGenGuar to properly combat the Shura reinforcements. It later participated in Operation Overgate, engaging in decisive battles against the Shura, Duminas' group, Dark Brain, and Neo Granzon.

Armaments & Attacks[]

Armaments[]

  • Dynamic Knuckle (ダイナミック・ナックル)

DyGenGuar launches its booster-propelled forearms at the enemy. The forearms are equipped with an Automatic Tracing System, however manual control is also possible.

  • General Blaster (ゼネラル・ブラスター)

Each of DyGenGuar's shoulders houses a gigantic heat lens that can unleash an intense energy burst, concentrated into a beam by using a gravitational field to form an invisible gravity barrel extending from the lenses. This is the same principle that the chest blasters of the Grungust Series operate on.

  • Guardian's Sword (ガーディアンズ・ソード)

The original sword DyGenGuar is supposed to be equipped with. The blade is curved into a "G" shape. Based on its size, it can be deduced that the weapon is stored within DyGenGuar's calf. It was only used in OGG before being removed from 2nd OG onwards, probably due to DyGenGuar already having the Sanshiki Zankantou.

  • Sanshiki Zankantou (参式斬艦刀 | Type-3 Ship-Cleaving Blade)

Inherited from the Grungust Type-3 Unit 2, this weapon is a state-of-the-art shapeshifting sword, its blade made from Zol Orichalconium, a specialized liquid metal containing organic polymer crystals. Through supplying energy from the mecha into the sword directly, the Zol Orichalconium in the cutting edge and within the sword's handle is capable of expanding and rehardening itself into different shapes for various attacks, from the initial compact Nihontou mode with high piercing power to either a Kukri-shaped mode for throwing, or a gigantic broadsword mode for dueling and ultimate attacks. When entering broadsword mode, the Sanshiki Zankantou's handle extends downwards while the hand guard splits open, as the towering blade, estimated to be somewhere around 70 meters in length, materializes into the air.

Solo Attacks[]

  • Zankantou - Denkou Sekka (斬艦刀・電光石火 | Ship-Cleaving Blade - Lightning Flash)

With the Zankantou in Nihontou mode, DyGenGuar channels energy into the Zankantou's tip before shooting it at the enemy. Removed in 2nd OG/OGMD before reappearing in DD and 30.

  • Zankantou - Gakai (斬艦刀・牙壊 | Ship-Cleaving Blade - Destructive Fang)

With the Zankantou in Nihontou mode, DyGenGuar dashes and swiftly slashes the enemy. Added in 2nd OG/OGMD.

  • Zankantou - Daisharin (斬艦刀・大車輪 | Ship-Cleaving Blade - Great Wheel)

With the Zankantou in Kukri mode, DyGenGuar throws the blade at the enemy like a boomerang.

  • Zankantou - Raikou-Giri (斬艦刀・雷光斬り | Ship-Cleaving Blade - Lightning Slash)

A technique utilizing the Zankantou in its broadsword mode. The attack pattern slightly differs depending on the game. In Alpha 2, DyGenGuar rushes forwards and slashes the enemy vertically from below, then follows with a horizontal strike, forming a cross-shaped slash mark, as cherry blossom petals flutter with each move. In OGs/OGG, amidst a thundering storm, DyGenGuar slashes the enemy twice horizontally, then finishes with a vertical cut from above. From 2nd OG onwards, the attack's battle animation replicates the one seen in Alpha 2.

  • Zankantou - Unyou no Tachi (斬艦刀・雲燿の太刀 | Ship-Cleaving Blade - Tachi of Shining Clouds)

DyGenGuar's ultimate solo attack. With the Zankantou in broadsword mode, DyGenGuar leaps high into the air before dropping down with a single, powerful bisecting slash. Sanger would often shout the battle cry "CHESUTO!" during this move.

"Unyou" (雲燿 | Shining Clouds) refers to lightning, a term coined by the 16th-century Jigen-ryuu swordfighting style. Jigen-ryuu emphasizes the importance of the "first strike", to deliver the finishing blow at lightning speed ("Unyou") with just a single move. Supposedly, "lightning speed" equals to 1/100000th of a second, or 0.1 milliseconds. "Tachi" (太刀) is a type of Japanese sword which predates the well-known katana. It is longer in size and curvier compared to the latter.

Combination Attacks[]

  • Tatsumaki Zankantou - Ikki Tousen (竜巻斬艦刀・逸騎刀閃 | Tornado Ship-Cleaving Blade - Great Horseback Blade Flash)

Combination attack between DyGenGuar and Aussenseiter. Both units activate their Pferd Modes, as Aussenseiter transforms into a giant horse for DyGenGuar to ride on, while DyGenGuar deploys the Zankantou in broadsword mode and dons its partner's cape. This process is dubbed as "Jinba Ittai" (人馬一体 | Man-Horse as One). The following attack animation varies depending on the game:

  • OG2: On horseback, DyGenGuar slashes the enemy horizontally, flinging them up into the air. The DGGs then leap upwards and DyGenGuar delivers a finishing vertical slash, shuddering the ground.
  • Alpha 3: After horizontally slashing the enemy, DyGenGuar follows by spinning the Zankantou at flashing speed, obliterating the target amidst a raging tornado of blade swings.
  • OGs/OGG: Replicates the Alpha 3 version, with an additional finishing slash by DyGenGuar after the tornado blade spin, opening up a gaping hole in the clouds above.
  • 2nd OG =>: The latest version of this attack is seemingly combined from the OG2 and the OGs animation. Aussenseiter gallops on void space using its feet-mounted Tesla Drives and leaps up, as DyGenGuar drops its mighty Zankantou on the enemy when its partner lands. After that, DyGenGuar follows with the usual tornado blade spin, then flings the enemy away, before boosting up and finishing the enemy with a final slash. The DGGs touch down on a large midair rock fragment as the enemy explodes next to them.
  • Zankantou - Ittou Nyuukon (斬艦刀・逸刀入魂 | Ship-Cleaving Blade - Great Blade Full Spirit)

Combination attack between DyGenGuar and Thrudgelmir in OG Gaiden's Shuffle Battler minigame. This attack is used with DyGenGuar's no-Zankantou form. It is unknown what actually happens in the attack.

  • Zankantou - Nitou Issen (斬艦刀・仁刀逸閃 | Ship-Cleaving Blade - Double Blade Great Flash)

Combination attack between DyGenGuar and Thrudgelmir in OG Gaiden's Shuffle Battler minigame. This attack is used with DyGenGuar's Zankantou-equipped form. It is unknown what actually happens in the attack.

Trivia[]

  • While it is obvious that "DyGenGuar" is an abbreviation of "Dynamic General Guardian", it is also a wordplay on Sanger Sombold's own name ("Daizengaa" - "Zengaa").
  • Due to the pronunciation of the DyGenGuar's name in Japanese English, English speaking fans of the series often refer to it as "Daizengar" maintaining the Japanese. A follow up conversation also was included in Super Robot Original Generation 2, whereby members of the SRX Team talks jokingly about renaming the SRX into either "DaiRyusei", "DaiAya", "DaiRai" or "DaiRaiOh".
  • In Original Generations, DyGenGuar's unusable built-in weapons (and their attack animations) are actually hidden in the game's code, and can only be seen only visible if a hacking tool is used.
